Private Lesson Rapid Fire: Mind-Mapping Example [The RNC], Disrupting Balance from Side Control Bottom + Attacking the Half-Butterfly + MORE!
One of the things I pride myself on is my ability to simplify things.
I remember in college, first hearing about “Occam’s Razor”, the thing that stood out to me most (in this medical context) was that people tend to create elaborate explanations for what otherwise can be explained very simply.
I ran with it.
In fact, to this day, if I’m trying to figure out a problem, I ask myself “what is the simplest solution?”
As Occam’s Razor says [paraphrased], “The Simplest Solution is The Best Solution”
In jiu-jitsu, I ask myself the same questions, all focused on simplicity?
What is the simplest route to get from point A (the takedown) to point B (the submission)?
What is the simplest transition to or from a particular position?
What is the simplest way to incite a reaction or create a mistake?
Et cetera…
Very often, especially in beginners, you see instances where in order to get from point A to point B, a student will take 15 different steps when, at each transition point, there is in fact, a much simpler path.
In today’s email, you’ll see this theme. I’ve talked in the past about how to “mind map” jiu-jitsu an I even wrote and created a video scribble for how to mind-map a rear naked choke. Today I’ll post a video showing the techniques/steps I would take in the event I were trying to mind-map the rear naked choke from a technical standpoint.
This first theme was inspired by two private lessons. The first being the original lesson with the student and the second being from a lesson this week where I was asked about the simplest, most efficient paths to getting high success rate submissions (and it doesn’t get much higher than the rear naked choke).
A few other private lesson notes
What’s the BEST way to Disrupt Balance from Bottom Side Control?
In my opinion, this is the “80/20” of simplifying your escapes
How I personally attack the Half-Guard/Half-Butterfly Guard
I simplify my attacks from this position quite simply based on my ability to off-balance my opponent and separate the arms. This is quite literally all I’m looking for unless my opponent stands up (then I enter the legs).
