What I’m learning:
Fact: If you can control a position long enough, your opponent will make mistakes.
If this is true, then: In order to attack effectively, you must know HOW to control a position.
Now, to be clear, this concept isn’t new to me. I’ve understood it for a while. I use the term “learning” with the present participle to indicate that I am currently and continuously learning and applying as a focus of my current training.
This idea of control, again, not new, has been top of mind for me since taking Romulo’s spider guard seminar. In the last few weeks, because of a concept I learned from that seminar, I’ve come to the conclusion that if I want to become great at a position, I have to learn how to control it first and foremost.
With regard to spider guard, I’ve been building the base, wholly focused on retention (“defending my castle”). Still focused on retention, I’ve moved my practice to some of my heavier students of higher rank (purple belt +), choosing ONLY to attack when I have a clear opportunity.
While I was shooting the video on mount control (posted Friday), I realized I could easily simplify HOW and WHEN to attack as an addendum to the control video. Again, if you understand how to control and are able to establish control, submissions become much, much easier.
In today’s video, I’m going to show you how you can start setting up your attacks.
First, we’ll talk about the importance of control and how it will help you more effectively set up your attacks.
Then, we’ll talk about two defensive positions and how to attack those positions (after first controlling them!)
Lastly, we’ll get into some limb isolation so we can FINALLY start attacking and dominating in the mount position.
Some of the basic attack set ups we’ll cover are:
Collar Chokes and Ezekiels
Limb Isolation (leading to smother, which I won’t cover (subscribe to my YT channel though bc I’ll make a video on it ASAP!)
Shoulder Locks (Key Lock)
Armbars set ups + Triangle if opportunity arises
And yes, for you S Mount enjoyers, I actually cover WHEN I go to S Mount and how to set up the attacks from there too
Lots of good stuff today! Let’s dive in!
