Hey there! Today we stumble upon an interesting topic that always gets asked by beginners.
It’s one of those topics that never really gets explained in class beyond the direction “Drill 2x each side and switch”.
It’s the topic of “directionality”. What side should you be drilling but further, how can you use some of these concepts to your advantage when it comes to training?
I stumbled upon this topic in a lesson with a student who was asking about arm-bar defense. He wanted to understand arm-bar defense. We simulated a situation where I fall into someone’s closed guard and what I showed was how I instinctively defended my right arm. I asked him to set up his armbar and would you believe, he attacked my right arm, though both were exposed.
Why is this?
It led to the broader conversation of directionality and why it’s important. Not just from a drilling perspective but also, from a predictive perspective. There are ways to use this strategically for offense and defense and in these videos, I’m going to show you just how.
Let’s dive in!
