Connection from the Guard Position
Understanding how we connect + Tips on removal and circumvention for more effective guard passing and playing
Hey there, hope you’re crushing your training week.
Today, I’m talking about connection from the guard position.
If you want to know the reason most entry level students fail at passing and playing guard it’s precisely covered in these videos today.
The main problem is understanding connection in both top and bottom positions.
From the guard passers perspective, you are much more mobile and powerful than your opponent on the ground. As such, you have the ability to enter positions more effectively. When you engage, however, if you’re not smart about your entry, then you will allow your opponent to engage from the bottom position.
On the other side of the coin, because you’re less mobile and less powerful than the person on top, you need to be smarter about how you enter into your guard. Further, when you do engage and establish your connection, if you’re not careful about maintaining, you’ll likely get your guard passed and your attacks will be really weak.
In today’s videos, I’m going to cover HOW to establish and maintain connection from the bottom position. And from the top position, I’m going to show you how to avoid connection as well as how to get around it.
From the bottom, I’m going to show you how to keep your position strong while you set up your attack by maintaining contact and connection.
From the top, when you’re in a passing position, I’m going to show you how to avoid your opponent’s ability to connect. If your opponent does connect, I’ll give you some tips on how to either remove the points of contact to pass OR circumvent them entirely.
Either way, the contact NEEDS to be addressed.
