BulletProofing your Jiu-jitsu Mindset [Part 1/2]
Some lessons from my professional life to your jiu-jitsu life
We’d just hit 300 students.
I’d tell people about this feat and 100% of the time I’d hear back “Man that’s incredible!”
But I didn’t feel so incredible… I felt a little empty and I couldn’t tell why.
I spoke to a friend, a successful business owner and he suggested I might’ve hit my “upper limit”. He recommended a book I check out so I did (The Big Leap). While reading it, I realized some pretty important things about my life that I’d never understood before in terms of my own personal growth and development. Namely, that I had reached my “capacity” to accept the abundance of the universe and now, I was at the upper limit of the current level.
Now this “accept the abundance of the universe” might seem lame but follow me for a few minutes because since I’ve adopted this most recent mindset shift, I
Have not woken up in pain or achiness despite training more
Been much more joyful and energetic when teaching
Have experienced a “flow state” for damn near 7 days
So if you’re wanting to see how I’ve manifested this, you’re probably asking what’s an “upper limit problem”? Glad you asked.
Upper limit problems are problems at a specific level. Think of it like a plateau… except in order to break past this, you have to dig deep to find a particular barrier that is keeping you from reaching the next level.
This particular challenge goes far beyond knowledge (learning more) or practice (training more) and dives much deeper into how your subconscious plays a role in your ability (or inability) to achieve goals.
For most people, it’s a subconscious fear of failure. For others (like myself), it’s a “fear of success”. Either way, your subconscious thoughts tend to manifest themselves physically in ways that will interfere with your progress both ON and OFF the mats. These beliefs are what are known as “limiting beliefs” and most of us have them —just at different levels.
In today’s email, I’m going to get into some of the “bulletproofing” methods I’ve used to develop my mindset. I’ll go into the upper limit problems, but first, I’m going to talk about a particular concept I’ve already more or less figured out for myself and that’s the idea of abundance versus scarcity in your training.
In my opinion, this is the first, most important shift a person needs to make in order to make sure they are able to train long-term. Once you can create this shift in your training, you can start working to achieve a constant state of flow and stay in positive feedback loops.
So step one
Start viewing our journey through the lens of abundance.
Step two
Understand Feedback Loops and become aware of “spiraling upwards versus downwards”
Step three [Part 2]
Implement 4 strategies for achieving a constant flow state and manifesting robust physical and mental health
Step four [Part 2]
Putting it all together to break through plateaus and stay in a perpetual positive feedback loop of abundance, joy and crushing your training partners.
